With the inauguration of the Heinz and Marianne Ebers Foundation on 24th October 1997, the Kunstmuseen Krefeld received a purchasing power that was quite unique in its hundred years' history. Never before has such a broad and enduring fund been presented by one sole source, and ensured at a time when public budgets are getting tight that the Kunstmuseen Krefeld can maintain their position among the numerous art museums in the Rhenish landscape. In the now fourteen years since the Foundation was set up, the collection has grown to include 53 works. Now for the first time the two storeys of Museum Haus Lange will show a representative cross-section of the collection of the Heinz and Marianne Ebers Foundation.
Among the special highlights are the constellations of works by US American artists Richard Artschwager (1923 in Washington D. C.), Richard Allen Morris (1933 in Long Beach, California), Stephen Shore (1947 in New York), the German artist Anton Henning (1964 in Berlin), and the Welsh artist Bethan Huws (*1961 in Bangor, Wales). In addition, the contours of the Collection are rounded off by outstanding single pieces by Teresa Hubbard/Alexander Birchler, Karin Kneffel, Paul McCarthy/Mike Kelley, Thomas Schütte, Kiki Smith and Christopher Williams.
The holdings of the Collection, which have largely been acquired in the context of the exhibitions held in Haus Lange and Haus Esters, extend across all the genres of art, allowing painting, sculpture, drawings, photography and video to form a highly varied web of fascinating interconnections. Firmly anchored in the context of the collections at the Kunstmuseen, the ongoing acquisition of specific complexes of works by individual artists has meant that the Foundation's collection has meanwhile developed its very own contour.
