The topic of living and habitation was closely connected with the development of Neues Bauen, right from the start. And Ludwig Mies van der Rohe likewise developed his buildings as a synthesis of architecture and design. His modernist interiors with chrome steel furniture made their way into middle class homes and today are among the choicest classics of modernism.
The publication Modern wohnen. Möbeldesign und Wohnkultur der Moderne was produced as part of the Mies van der Rohe research discussions conducted by the DFG project Critical Catalogue Raisonné of the Furniture and Furniture Designs of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich. The current state of the research forms the backdrop for the 12th krefelder architekturtage. Mies van der Rohe’s concept of interior design, his furniture designs and furniture production will be studied with a look at the actual objects and concepts, and in the wider context of modernism. Finally the question of the relevance of design classics in present-day living spaces will also be looked at.
